History of the Wedding Cake

The first multi-tiered wedding cakes appeared at nineteenth century royal weddings. The cakes, which reflected the classic style of successively smaller, stacked tiers, were made to resemble the fourteenth-century Saint Bride's Church in the city of London.

The classic white color of the cake and icing originally symbolized purity of the bride, however status was another reason for this trend. During the Victorian era, brown sugar was the common ingredient used in sweets; only the most affluent families could afford the most expensive refined white sugar.

Today, the cake can reflect the couple's style and dreams.
The carefully stacked-tiered construction of the wedding cake can symbolize the constructive and synergetic nature a marriage is meant to enable.

A plentiful foundation (bottom tier) of true love & commitment between the bride and groom, along with the strong support of the families and friends, allow a secure basis for building up the successive tiers of a sweet & beautiful life together.

The classic circular shape of the tiers of a wedding cake can symbolize an un-ending sweetness of a marriage relationship.

Others also ponder the circular shape as a symbol of a loving eternal God, who gracefully brought the couple together.

The first loving act together by the newlywed's, consists of cutting the cake, and the mutual feeding of a beautifully decorated and sweet tasting slice, for one another's enjoyment.
